y paternal grandfather, William John Jacobs, served in the United States Army during World War I. Bill was born in County Carlow, Ireland and came to the United States in 1907 at the age of 15. Bill had been a blacksmith's apprentice in Ireland and continued his work as a blacksmith in America. He was naturalized as an American citizen in November 1919 upon his return to Pennsylvania.
