Zachary Taylor Piephoff was born 21 Feb 1899 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg Co., S.C., a son of Robert Presley and Harriet Minnie (Wolfe) Piephoff. He had the following siblings: Melvin Beauford (1896-1982); Clarence Eugene (1901-1983); Mark Parker (1904-2005); Lucy Rowland (1906-1996); and an unnamed brother who died at birth.

He entered the U.S. Navy 25 Jul 1917 in Columbia, Richland Co., S.C., reporting to his receiving ship in New York, N.Y., until 1 Aug 1917. He then transferred to a receiving ship in Boston, Mass., until 9 Aug 1917. He attended Naval Radio School, Cambridge, Mass to 1 Mar 1918. Following that, he transferred to the Naval Air Station, Miami, Fla., until 29 Jul 1918. He reported to a receiving ship in Philadelphia, Pa., until 2 Aug 1918. He was then stationed at the Naval Air Station, Pauillac, France until 7 Oct 1918. He was then transferred to the Naval Air Station, Queensland, Ireland, until 11 Nov 1918. Following his radio school, his rank was Landsman for Electrician Radio; promoted to Electrician 3rd Class Radio; and to Electrician 1st Class Radio. He was honorably discharged 20 Aug 1919. His service number was 1532241.

Zachary married Nancy Caroline Bishop (1906-1996). They had at least one child: Zachary Taylor (1931-2001). In 1940, they were living on Warren St., Williamston, Martin Co., N.C., and Zachary was a church minister.

He registered for the draft again on 16 Feb 1942 in Martin Co., N.C. At the time, he and Nancy were living on Warren St., Williamston, Martin Co., N.C., and he was employed by the Presbyterian Church there. This draft card describes him as 5 ft., 9 inches, 170 lbs., blue eyes, blonde hair, and light complexion.

He died 6 Mar 1988 in Concord, Cabarrus Co., N.C., and is buried in Section B, Oakwood Cemetery, Concord, Cabarrus Co., N.C.
