Capt John Yates Beall CSN

onfederate Soldier - " John Yates Beall was tried for "Violating the Rules of War" and "Acting as a Spy" because of his operations on Lake Erie in attempting to free Confederate prisoners on Johnson's Island, near Sandusky, Ohio, and for subsequently attempting to sabotage the railroad between Buffalo and Dunkirk, New York. He was executed on Governor's Island. Some reports indicate Beall's body was taken to Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn but there are no records of his being buried there. All of the bodies buried on Governor's Island were disinterred in the late 1870's and re-buried in Cypress Hills. It is probable that he is buried in an unmarked grave in the National Cemetery" - John F Walter .
