James F. Marshall was born at Concord, N.H., 31 August, 1846. He was married twice, his first wife being Emma L. Shaw at Franklin, TN., On October 24, 1868. She died lass than a year later in August 1869. His second marriage was to Emma A. Hall (must have liked the name Emma) at Hill, NH, April 15th, 1872. They had four children: Frank A., Chester H., Fred J., and Charles R.

James F. Marshall was a member of the Storer Post No. 1, Department of New Hampshire, Grand Army of The Republic, and of the A.F. and A.M. His wife was an honored and active member of the W.R.C.

His father was Benjamin F. Marshall who also served in the Civil War.

This is a brief history of the unit.

The 12th New Hampshire Infantry was organized at Concord, September 10, 1862; the ten companies have been recruited within ten days time, and was mustered into the U.S. Service September 26, 1862. It left Concord the next day for Washington, D.C., and arrived at Camp Chase, Arlington Heights, September 30, joining Col. Wright’s Division of Gen. Casy’s Command of the reserve Corps, Defense of Washington. On October 5th, the unit was ordered to report to Gen. Whipple’s Division, 3rd Army Corps, at Fort Corcoran, VA., and on the 17th the command marched to Washington, then moved by rail to Knoxville, MS., to join McClellan’s forces, remaining in the vicinity of that place until October 22, when Whipple’s Division was assigned to the 12th Army Corps, later to the 3rd Corps, and on the 28th marched to Potomac Creek, near Falmouth, VA., reaching there November 23, 1862.

The unit encamped there until December 11, when it marched to near Fredericksburg, and on the 12th, while crossing the Rappahannock River, was shelled by the enemy. During the battle of the 13th and 14th, the unit was supported by batteries. Soon after the battle, the unit returned to the original camp and remained until January 20, 1863, when the unit took part in the famous “Mud March”. The unit was engaged during winter in picket and drill duty, and on April 30, moved to Chancellorsville, bearing a gallant part of the battle of that place, May 2-5, 1863. The unit entered the battle with 558 officers and men and lost 317, the heaviest loss of any regiment in that engagement. It returned to camp near Falmoutn, VA., until June 11, 1863, when it entered upon the Gettysburg Campaign, arriving July 1, 1863. Extremely exhausted and without rations, the unit participated in the battle the next day, losing 94 officers and men, killed or wounded. Soon after this battle, the unit was assigned to duty at Point Lookout, MD., as guards at the military prison, remaining there for eight months.

ON April 11, 1864, the unit moved to Yorktown, VA., and on May 4, joined the fleet on the James River. They landed at Bermuda Hundred and were engaged in the operations about that place and in the battle of Swift Creek, VA. The unit afterwards participated in engagements at Drewry’s Bluff, Relay House or Fort Stevens, Port Walthill, Cold Harbor, losing 165 out of less than 300 troops. The remaining troops engaged in the siege of Petersburg, Mine Explosion, Bermuda Hundred and the fall of Richmond, VA., and numerous other skirmishes. In the campaign of 1864, it served with Wistar’s Brigade, Weitzel’s (2dn) Division, 18th Corps, and in December 1864, was assigned to Donohoe’s Brigade, Deven’s Division, and 24th Corps. This Brigade was the first infantry command that entered Richmond. It was mustered out at Richmond and Manchester, VA., June 21, 1865.

James F. Marshall was promoted to the rank of Corporal at Chapin’s Farm, VA., November 1, 1864, for his efficient efforts. He was severely wounded at Cold Harbor, VA., June 3, 1864 by gunshot through the left shoulder. He was confined in general hospital at the White House Landing, VA., thence sent to David’s Island, NY., thence to Brattleboro, VT., and returned to his regiment in October, 1864, at Bermuda Hundred, VA.
