Former Commander-in-Chlef of G.A.R. Dies At Age of 104

Seattle, Washington (AP) Hiram Gale, Civil war veteran and former commander-in-chlef of the Grand Army of the Republic died yester-day after a 28-month illness. He was 104. Gale died in his bed at the American Lake veterans hospital near Seattle. His relatives have not yet made funeral arrangements. Gale's death cut the membership of the GAR which once numbered 409,000 to seven and the survivors of the Union Army to 11. These are the last of the estimated 2,000,000 men who served with the Union Forces in the Civil War. Born In Waterbury, VT on Nov 8, 1846, Gale attended Gale lege at Galesville, Wisconsin. He left college to serve as private with Company 46th Wisconsin Infantry. Gale fought as corporal through some of the Union bloodiest campaigns from January to October 1865 when he mustered out. He published newspapers In Wisconsin and Minnesota, then moved to the Puget Sound area in 1887. He and his son Edgar established the Bremerton Washington News. In 1901 He retired from active affairs shortly after his 100th birthday.
