John Joseph Dore Jr., nicknamed JJ, was born on May 11, 1919 in Brooklyn, New York to Rena Hall Sipp and stockbroker John Joseph Dore. Rena and John, both natives of New York City, welcomed their second and youngest son, William Francis, on October 26, 1920. Less than two years after William's birth, the family moved from Brooklyn to Hempstead, New York, where John and William's younger sister, Rena, was born on June 11, 1922.

John's younger brother, William, joined the New York National Guard on September 24, 1940 and later became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. On July 3, 1941, John enlisted in the Army in Hartford, Connecticut. Less than 2 weeks before his enlistment, John's younger sister, 19-year-old Rena, died on June 24, 1941 in Groveland, New York.

John was killed in action on August 1, 1943 in a plane crash near Ploesti, Romania; he was 24 years old.

"Lt. John J. Dore, Jr. was assigned as Command Pilot to the 345th Bomb Squadron, the 98th Bomb Group, in the 9th Air Force, USAAF. B-24D, 42-40102, Old Baldy. The airplane and crew were lost near their target at Ploesti, Romania, shot down by flak and killed in their plane's crash (KIA). The AC took a direct hit from a Romanian 88mm flak round. Pilot 1st. He was buried at Florence American Cemetery and Memorial in Florence, Italy.

John was survived by both of his parents, younger brother, William, and multiple aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his younger sister, Rena, multiple aunts and uncles, maternal grandparents, Estella Franks Sipp and Christian Sipp, and paternal grandparents, Mary O'Connell Dore and John Dore.
