rivate John Corney was born August 2, 1880 Denaby, Conisbrough, Yorkshire, England, a mining village to Sarah Willcock and John Corney in a family to have 13 children. His brother Edward “Harry” Corney was my step-grandfather. His younger brother Private Frederick Corney would also be killed in action serving for King and country in 1918. In 1904 he married Eleanor and then had several children. After his father suffered ill health due to working at Denaby Main colliery, they emigrated from Yorkshire, England to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1906. John joined the Great War effort with the Coldstream Guards. Private John Corney, Service Number 3291, age the age of 34 years old, died at the Battle of St Julien on October 21, 1914. He is commemorated at Addenda Panel 59, Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
