HAMPSTEAD - Carl L. O'Donnell, 76, formerly of Sandown, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Manchester.

He was born in Everett, Mass., and graduated from Everett High School. He received his degree in business management from Boston University.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict.

O'Donnell was a construction budget analyst for the M.B.T.A., retiring after 20 years of service. He spent his retirement years associated with the Lazarus House Ministries of Lawrence, first as a volunteer for 10 years and later as a staff member for the past 10 years.

He was a recipient of the Christ the Servant Award in 1985, and later in 2002 with the In His Footsteps Award. He was recognized for his charity work by the city of Lawrence in November of 2002 when Mayor Michael J. Sullivan proclaimed Thanksgiving Day as Carl O'Donnell Day. He was also recognized at that time with proclamations by Congressman Martin Meehan, Speaker of the House Thomas Finneran and Senate President Thomas Birmingham.

He is survived by two sisters, Anna O'Donnell of Hampstead, with whom he made his home, and Mary Wall of Peabody, Mass.; one brother, Joseph O'Donnell of Everett; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Wednesday in Saint Anne's Church, Hampstead. A private family burial service will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
