Rev. P. M. Lenahan, Priest 37 Years, Dies

Rev. Phalom M. Lenahan, SSJ, native of Sugar Notch, a Josephite priest who spent all 37 years of his priesthood in the city of Baltimore, died Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's Manor, the Josephite retirement home on W. Lake Ave., Baltimore. Rev. Father Lenahan was 70.

Born August 8, 1903, in Sugar Notch, he was a son of John Patrick and Sarah Golden Lenahan. He attended Sugar Notch Schools.

Rev. Father Lenahan entered the Josephite minor seminary at Newburg, N.Y., in 1925, advanced to the major seminary five years later, and was ordained by Bishop John McNamara in 1936.

Most of his priestly life was spent in administrative work or as chaplain to St. Francis Academy, E. Chase St., Baltimore. He was treasurer of the Josephites and secretary to the Superior General for six years; became rector of the House of Administation in 1942 and three years later was appointed chaplain to St. Francis Academy and chaplain of the industrial school for girls conducted by the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart. He was Chaplain of the Oblate Retreat League, director of the Oblate Helpers and of the Dominican Tertiaries.

In 1961, the Josephites opened St. Joseph's Manor on the edge of Baltimore for aged and sick priests and Rev. Father Lenahan was appointed the first rector.

There are no immediate survivors.

A wake service was held Wednesday at St. Pius V Church, Baltimore, and a Requiem Mass offered there Thursday morning.

Funeral will be held Saturday, with Mass of the Resurrection at 10 in St. Charles Church, Sugar Notch. Interment in the parish cemetery, Sugar Notch.
