| In Memory of Calvin Hurd | Calvin Hurd, 78, died July 17, 2009 at his home. He was born February 13, 1931 at Hoisington, Kansas, the son of John E. and Nellie (Kendall) Hurd. He married Della Jackson May 19, 1973 at Russell, Kansas. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Mr. Hurd was the owner-operator of Hurd's Scrap Iron. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War, attaining the rank of Sergeant working as a Special Weapons Technician serving twenty-four years. He was a Prisoner of War in North Korea for three years. Mr. Hurd was a member of Myers Chapel AME Church, Worshipful Master of the Plumbline Lodge #28, Western Star Consistory #18, Wichita, Kansas; Second Degree Mason, Member of the Princetall Grand Lodge of Kansas, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111, all of Great Bend. He was an avid card player, either on the computer or at Slack's Bar and Grill. Survivors include his wife, Della Hurd, of the home; two sons: Calvin Hurd, Jr., Norman, Oklahoma; Michael Calvin Hurd, Russell, Kansas; three daughters: Cynthia Schuler and husband, Phillip, Lawton, Oklahoma; Carmela Hardy, Lawton, Oklahoma; and Gwen Caro and husband, Vincent, Jr., Larned, Kansas; twelve grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by eight brothers, Oliver, Donnely, Nelson, Charlie, William, Joe, Chester, and John Hurd; and two sisters, Rosie Guliford and an infant. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Bryant Funeral Home with the Reverend Loyse Clay officiating. Burial with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 22, 2009 with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials are requested to the VFW Post #3111 or American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home. |
