On April 13, 1945, a B-29A Superfortress (serial number 44-69799) carrying eleven crew members and one passenger was on a bombing mission over targets in Tokyo, Japan, when it crashed for unknown reasons into a wheat field north of Tokyo. One of the crew members died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash and was buried in a nearby temple, and was recovered after the war. The remaining ten crew members and the passenger were captured and transferred to Tokyo Military Prison. The prison was hit during air raids on May 25-26, 1945, and more than seventy Allied soldiers died as a result because the guards would not allow prisoners to seek safety outside their locked structures. The crew and passenger from the B-29A died in the prison fire caused by the raids, and the remains of only three of the crew could be identified after the incident. Attempts to identify the eight others who were on the Superfortress and died in the prison were unsuccessful.

Lieutenant Colonel Doyne L. Turner entered the U.S. Army Air Forces from Arkansas and served with the 458th Bombardment Squadron, 330th Bombardment Group (Very Heavy). He was the observer aboard the B-29A, and was one of the survivors of the crash who died at the Tokyo Military Prison. His remains were not recovered and he is still unaccounted-for. Today, Lieutenant Colonel Turner is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
