Richard Newton Brown served in the United States Navy and served in a Navy Patrol Squadron in Korea. The crew was returning from service in Korea when the plane a P2V Neptune patrol plane missed an approach to land at NAS Barbers Point Hawaii. It crashed into a mountainside on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. All eight crew members perished in the crash.

"According to Richard Newton Brown's obituary which was in the Chillicothe (OH) Gazette , he was 22 when he died. He was a member of a crew of eight that was first reported "missing" when their plane crashed on the island of Oahu, Hawaii on 22 Jan 1954. Later it was confirmed that all of the eight man crew of the Navy P2V Neptune patrol bomber perished when the plane crashed into a mountainside near NAS Barbers Point Hawaii. The crew was returning from service in the western Pacific.

Richard N Brown was the son of Richard and Hattie Brown and the grandson of Mr & Mrs Newton Scaggs of Waverly. He joined the Navy after his graduation from Waverly High School where he was a member of the high school football team.

Richard N Brown was survived by his parents, grandparents, and a sister."
