Territory of Florida County of Gadsden

On this the twelfth day of March in the year of our Lord 1838 personally appeared before me Thomas Randall Judge of the superior Court of the Middle District of Florida Ralfe Bozeman a resident of the County of Gadsden aforesaid & Territory aforesaid aged seventy-nine years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following Declarations in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832.

That he Ralfe Bozeman entered the service of the United States and enlisted during the War under the command of the following named officers, to wit, under the command of General Francis Marion, Colonel John Lanferd Dart [sic, John Lanford Dart], Major Benjamin Snipes & Captain McCall -- the [sic, that] he Ralfe Bozeman enlisted in May 1777 under General Marion during the War and served until after peace & was discharged in Charleston South Carolina (the month not recollected) in 1781. That he resided in Williamsburg County South Carolina at the time he entered the Service of the United States & served General Marion's Army at Nelson's ferry on Santee River South Carolina where he volunteered & enlisted as before mentioned. The battles or skirmishes he was then are as follows -- the first at Dorchester, the second at Moncks Corner, the third at Black Mingo, the next in General Penkny's [sic, Pinckney or Pickens?] Lane, the next at the taking of a body of Tories on Pedee River above Mars Bluff, the next at Camden, the next at the Eutaw Springs commanded by General Nathanael Greene. He Ralfe Bozeman was within the State of South Carolina & that he has no documentary evidence & that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his services --

Interrogatories1st Where and in what year were you born?

1st I was born in Bladen County North Carolina & in the year 1760 as I have heard my parents say.

Inter. 2nd Have you any record of your age and if so where is it?

2nd I have not, but have seen it in my father's Bible which was burnt in Charleston South Carolina in 1794 in the month of June.

Int. 3rd Where were you living when called into service: where have you lived since the

Revolutionary War and where do you now live?

3rd I was living in Williamsburg County South Carolina. I then after the Revolutionary War followed the seas for 32 years & lived then in Charleston a while & then moved into the State of Georgia & have lived in Bullock County, Brian County, Effingham County, Liberty County, Twiggs County, Houston County & Thomas County & in December 1836 moved to Gadsden County Territory of Florida where I now live

Int. 4th How were you called into service; were you drafted; did you volunteer or were you a substitute, and if in substitute, for whom?

4th I went voluntarily & enlisted under General Marion during the war

5th State the names of some of the regular officers who were with the troops when you served, such Continental and militia regiments as you can recollect and the general circumstances of your service.

Ans. 5th There were no regular officers with the troops where I served as I recollect nor was there any Continental or militia regiments with the troops which I served except at the battle of the Eutaw Springs where General N. Greene commanded. I know not the general circumstances only that I was detailed several times to attend to the sick & wounded by Doctor Axom Surgeon & physician of general Marion's troops.

Int. 6th Did you ever receive a discharge from the service, and if so, by whom was it given and what has become of it?

Ans. 6th I did receive a discharge from the service from John Lanford Dart Colonel & it is lost from me. I don't know what has become of it.

Int. 6th [sic] State the names of persons to whom you are known in your present neighborhood and who can testify as to your character for veracity and their belief in your services as a soldier in the revolution.

Ans. 6th [sic] I would refer you to Henry Gee & Isham Johnston as to my services as a soldier of the revolution, and to Squire Austin.

In order to obtain the benefit of an act of Congress before mentioned passed 7th of June 1832, Be it known unto all men that I do hereby relinquish all right title & claim to any compensation or pension from the United States except that to which I am entitled under said [act] of 1832.
