Gott enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 8, 1941, he served with the 330th BS, 93rd Bomb Group. On May 3, 1943, during an inspection tour, Capt. James E. Gott along with 13 others were killed in a crash of a B-24 Liberator of the 8th Air Force out of RAF Bovingdon, England, on Mt. Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes peninsula after an aborted attempt to land at the Royal Air Force station at Kaldadarnes, Iceland.

James Edward Gott was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart.

James is buried in the family plot in the Richmond Cemetery, Sec N, Lot 159.
