Age 26 - 16 October, 1940, Lyman Curtis Lutes registers with the United States Army in Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana.

1940, Lyman C. Lutes is stationed at Fort Sill Military Reservation, Comanche, Oklahoma, USA. He joins the Air Force Cadets, and learns to fly. His service number is: 35160867 6294090.

9 June, 1941, Lyman is 'inducted' into the United States Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, USA. Later that same year, he is transferred to Will Rogers Field, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, home of the 38th Air Base Squadron. Here he will receive his basic training, and additional training on light and medium bombers, as well as practice bombing and aerial gunnery.

About January 1942, Lyman is transferred to New Guinea, and later the Netherlands East Indies, and the Philippines, where he will serve with the 19th Bombardment Group, and the Fifth Air Force Service Command, working in a unit of their Statistical Section. In 1942, the Chief of Staff in charge of the 'Fifth' was General Schriever.

Age 31 - 10 October, 1945, Lyman is officially 'honourably discharged' from the Army under their 'Readjustment Program.' He is authorized to wear the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with two Battle Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Ribbon. He is 'processed out' through Camp Atterbury, south-west of Edinburg, Indiana.
