DeWitt Talmadge Wham was born 14 Mar 1892 in Fountain Inn, Greenville Co., S.C., a son of Joseph Marion and Mary Evelina (Rice) Wham. He had the following siblings: Benjamin Franklin (1873-1954); Laura Lavinia (1875-1972); Mabel Evaline (1878-1934); Robert Stewart (1880-1960); John Thomas (1884-1936); Barbara Annette (1886-1986); Joseph Richard (1888-1957); Clarissa Jane (1890-1961).

He registered for the draft 24 May 1917 in Spartanburg Co., S.C. His draft card describes him as tall, slender, dark brown eyes, and dark brown hair.

DeWitt entered the National Army 2 Jul 1918 in Spartanburg and served as a Private in the Training Detachment of the University of South Carolina, Columbia, Richland Co., S.C., until 28 Aug 1918. He then served with the Quartermaster Corps until 11 Sep 1918; M Truck Co. 527 until 24 Oct 1918; Motor Transport Co. D until 8 Nov 1918; The Motor Transport Co. K until 1 Jan 1919; and the Mobilization Repair Shop Unit 30th until his honorable discharge 1 Apr 1919. His service number was 3023454.

He married Helen Margaret Padgett.

In 1940, the census lists DeWitt as living with his sister and brother-in-law, Laura and B. Edward Ligon, on Wedgewood Dr., Greenville, Greenville Co., S.C., and DeWitt was working as an architect. In 1950, DeWitt was living with his nephew and family, Edward W. Ligon, at 212 Mt. View St., Greenville, Greenville Co., and working as an estimator for a wholesale tile company.

He died of acute coronary thrombosis 9 Jun 1963 in Greenville, Greenville Co., S.C., and is buried in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, Greenville Co., S.C.

Funeral services for DeWitt T. Wham, 71, of 23 E. Earle St., an executive of Campbell Tile Co., will be conducted today at 5:30 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary by Dr. C. Newman Faulconer and Dr. R. C. Grier. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Donald C. Gibbs, Herbert Moses, Charlie Bryan, William Garoni, Earle Maxwell, Perry Ashmore, Harry Clyborne and Monroe Cox.

Mr. Wham was born in Simpsonville, a son of the late Joseph M. and Mary Rice What, and lived for a time in Spartanburg before coming to Greenville in 1918.

He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and Wofford College.

Mr. Wham had been associated with Campbell Tile Co. for many years. Mr. Wham was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

He was a veteran of World War I.

Mr. Wham died at his home yesterday at 10:20 a.m. after a sudden attack.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Padgett Wham of the home; and two sisters, Mrs. E. B. Ligon and Mrs. G. P. Campbell of Greenville,
