This is a possible brother of Joseph Richard Barnett who was in the Civil War.

I believe that John W. (?) Barnett who was living in McMinn county, Tennessee in 1840 could be the father of Joseph Richard Barnett. He appears on page 131 of the census. His middle initial is unclear. It could be an "S". In the 1830 census, he has one son under age five, who could be Joseph. Joseph named his first son John W. Barnett, which is a typical naming pattern. In the same census, John W. was listed as 30 to 40 years of age. There was also a female of 30 to 40 years of age, probably his wife. There were no other children listed in the family at this time. They were close to two families headed by William Wood. Joseph also named one of his sons, William Wood.

Another possible father for Joseph is Josephus Barnett, who also had a son under five in the 1830 census and was living in McMinn county, TN. Another is Rowland Barnett, who also had a boy under five, etc. There was another Joseph Barnett, but he had six girls under the age of 10. Samuel Barnett in the same area had 4 boys under 10. There is another John W. Barnett in McMinn county in 1830. He has one boy under five, 2 boys 5 to 10, one girl under five and two girls age 5-10. He appears on page 151 of the 1830 census of McMinn county, TN. He lives near William Barnett, Samuel H. Barnett and William H. Barnett.

Joseph was listed in the following court document as the spouse of Margaret Adaline Smith:

Found a marriage of Joseph H. Barnett to M. A. Smith on 3 Mar 1849 in McMinn County, Tennessee. Should be Joseph R. Barnett. Also found a record of a marriage of a Robert Smith to Leah in McMinn County performed by W. C. Barnett. Could be Margaret's younger brother.

Information from Marjorie Freeman Jacques: 6/17/02: "Have you heard the story that either Joseph or Margaret were Native American? I haven't found anything on this as yet but am still looking. Grandma said they never stayed anyplace long and just traveled around in a covered wagon. That is why William Jackson was born in Illinois. Grandma said he was born in the back of a covered wagon."

Based solely on the births of his children, Joseph could not have served long in the Civil War. He had a child born 24 Jan 1864, which indicates that he was probably home sometime early in 1863. Therefore, the first record, where he called himself J. R. Barnett as did in the 1850 census and served only 16 days, then had a child in Illinois the next January looks like a possible fit.

Joseph possibly served in the Civil War. There are four records--one Confederate and three Union--

Isaac Barnett is a possible brother to Joseph based on census records and on the sale of items after the death of Robert Smith.

There is also an Isaac Barnett, age 23, who was a Private in the Union Army, under Captain Wycoff, company D. He enlisted at Unionville, MO on 15 Feb 1862 and deserted on 25 Oct 1862 from Lexington, MO.
