Tio Juan conspired with my mother to get me away from my house at 782 Pugsley in the Bronx so she and others could set up the basement for my surprise bridal shower.

Mami gave me this long story that Tio Juan was not feeling well and Tia Gloria wanted someone to be with him that day and go to his restaurant and help him. I remember it was a LONG day, a hot and humid New York summer day. He drove me everywhere downtown, shopping, etc. He talked about business, the world, my job at Texaco at the time, everything and anything.

Tio Juan was always a little long winded and his stories endless and most times without a point, but I always knew that he loved me very much and was proud of me. Although public signs of affection was not a strong Valentin straight, through his words and actions, he showed me more affection, respect and pride than my own father. I was always made to feel like his favorite niece and at times like a daughter.

Later in the day when we finally got home and was surprised at my bridal shower filled with family and friends, I turned to him and he had a great grin. As was usual the case, he and Mami chatted/quarrelled about the food. Being the cook, he always had something to say about anyone's cooking and Tia Gloria would remark "Johnny, leave it alone, it's fine." or something to defuse the silliness between him and a family member.

But the thing I remember the most, was the pride he had in sharing the day with me and being part of this great surprise. I will always remember his great love for me and our family.
