Escaped via tunnel at Stalag Luft III in 'the great escape' . Recaptured at Metz railway station by the Gestapo. Taken first to Sachsenhausen concentration camp then to Berlin, escaped the prison at Berlin was recaptured again and returned to Sachsenhausen. Later returned to Stalag Luft III and was a key witness in bringing his 50 fellow escapers murderers to justice after the war
